Why the nose matters

Importance of nasal appearance

We often assume the first place people look when they meet someone is the eyes. Scientific evidence shows it is actually just below the eyes, and that area includes the nose. The ideal nose is in keeping with your gender, ethnicity and the rest of your face. It should be harmonious with your features and never distract from your eyes. And it is of utmost importance that the nose not only looks great, but functions great.

The procedure family

Rhinoplasty (nasal surgery)

What was previously known as a “nose job” usually referred to surgery that changes the outside appearance of the nose. Any reshaping requires careful attention to your other facial features, so the result is harmonious and in balance with the rest of the face.

01

Rhinoplasty

Changes the shape or function of the outer part of the nose.

02

Septoplasty

Improves the function of the inner part of the nose.

03

Septorhinoplasty

Addresses both together: appearance outside, breathing inside.

What to expect

How the surgery is done

Patient in a calm clinic setting
  1. 1

    A half-day visit

Rhinoplasty is a day surgery. Patients come to the operating room for about half a day and go home once they have recovered from anesthesia.

  2. 2

    Anesthesia, your way

Performed under general anesthetic or sedation (twilight surgery), depending on your preference and Dr. Javidnia's assessment.

  3. 3

    Incisions that stay hidden

Most incisions are made inside the nose. Occasionally a small incision on the columella, between the nostrils, achieves the best result.

  4. 4

    Reshape, close, protect

Cartilage and bone are cut, reshaped or added; the skin is re-draped, incisions are sutured, and a cast or dressing protects the nose.

After surgery

Recovery, week by week

Care of the nose after surgery is paramount to the final result.

Day 1

Home with a caregiver. Rest in bed for the remainder of the day and night, except to use the washroom.

Week 1

Dressings and removable sutures come off. Most patients return to work and normal daily activities.

Weeks 1 to 2

Light activities resume. Avoid heavy lifting and high-impact activity for at least two weeks.

Month 1

Hold off on heavy exercise and the gym for at least a month, so swelling settles and the nose heals.
