Otoplasty (Cosmetic Ear Surgery)
Reposition and reshape prominent or asymmetric ears — with an incision or incisionless suture technique.
What it corrects
Ears usually only draw attention when they protrude, are asymmetric, or have an unusual earlobe. Otoplasty brings the ears closer to the head and makes them symmetric, and can also correct earlobe deformity, trauma, enlarged piercings or previous gauges. As a board-certified ENT with head-and-neck plastic training, Dr. Javidnia has performed many ear surgeries.
How it is done
The technique depends on which part of the ear causes the protrusion and on your preferences — either incisions behind the ear for maximal correction, or, for some patients, an incisionless approach that places special sutures under the skin. Performed under local or general anesthesia at our on-site facility, it takes about an hour as a day procedure.
Recovery
A light dressing protects the ears, with tenderness that is easily managed. Dressings come off and the ears are cleaned one to two days later. Most sutures dissolve; any others are removed at one week. Most bruising and swelling resolves within one to two weeks, and patients return to work or school by one week.
